Description

ANTOINE I (King of Portugal). The Pseaumes of D. Antoine king of Portugal. With a preliminary dissertation on the you & the you in speaking to God. The Hague: Abraham Troyel, 1691. - In-12, red morocco, boards decorated with a frame composed of gilt fillets and a large roulette with vine and bird motifs, gilt scroll motif at the corners, central composition made of a repetition of flower and thistle irons symmetrically arranged in a cross, associated with suns at the ends and other flower motifs in between, spine with ornate nerves (period binding). New edition of the translation made by Du Ryer of the 7 psalms of Antoine I king of Portugal (1531-1595), dedicated to Adrien baron de Gent. It was published by Jean Rou (1638-1711), man of letters and secretary-interpreter of the States-General of Holland, who for the occasion added a Dissertation on the you and the you in speaking about God which appears here for the first time. This translation by Du Ryer was very common at the time and was intended for the use of Protestants. A very nice copy in a rich decorated contemporary binding. Some minor wear and tear, blackened gold in places, not serious. Scattered foxing. One finds this modern note on the third white endpaper: " sort of examination of conscience or rather of confession which seems to us a virulent satyr ".
