HOMER. ΟMHPOY ΟΔΥΣΣEIA, Homeri Odyssea; id est de rebus ab Ulysse gestis. Unà cum Batrochomyomachia, Hymnis, & Epigrammatis. [Geneva] : Jean Vignon, 1609. - In-16, havana morocco, gilt border, gilt irons on the corners, and gilt arms surmounted by a gilt cartouche with the mention " Dux Guisius Hoc te munere donat " on the boards, smooth spine decorated (period binding). Rare edition entirely printed in Greek, of Homer's "Odyssey". Vignon gave the same year a Greco-Latin edition, accompanied by "The Iliad", which is more often encountered. Proof of its rarity, no copy is listed in French or foreign public libraries (see WorldCat). A VERY EXPENSIVE COPY, WITH THE ARMS OF THE DUKE OF GUISE. According to Olivier, Hermal and Roton (Pl.50), these arms are those of Henri de Lorraine, 3rd Duke of Guise, known as the Scarred One, assassinated at the castle of Blois by order of Henri III in 1588. Surmounted by a cartouche bearing the inscription: "Dux Guisius Hoc te munere donat", they adorned prize books awarded by virtue of a foundation. At least four other bindings bearing these arms and the cartouche are known, all covering books published after the death of the Duke of Guise. One is kept at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, on a Pliny (Geneva, 1611), a second covers a Cicero, also published in Geneva by Jean Vignon, in 1617 (sale J.-Ch. Brunet, II, 1868, n°532), a third one on a Seneca of 1604, also published by Jean Vignon (sale Binoche et Giquello, 9 December 2013, n° 196) and a fourth one covering an edition of Stace's works published in Leiden in 1616 (Bibliothèque générale du Lycée de Toulon, D. 2509, cited by OHR, pl. 50 verso). Missing the links. Corners and lower headpiece restored, snags on spine, without endpapers. Tears with missing title, without damage to text, old scribbling in ink on verso of folio *8, foxing. The last leaf is missing. Provenance: Oratorian of Toulouse, with handwritten mention " Oratorii Tolosani " on the title (17th century). - House of institution of the Oratory, with stamp on the title. - House of Perreyve, Fribourg, with stamp on the first counterfoil.
