OVID. The Metamorphoses. Amsterdam : R. & J. Wetstein & G. Smith, 1732. - 2 volumes in one folio, granite calf, spine decorated, spotted edges (period binding). Superb edition of Ovid's "Metamorphoses" in the French translation and with the remarks and historical explanations of the abbot Antoine Banier (1673-1741). "Magnificent work" according to Cohen (768), it includes an abundant engraved intaglio illustration composed of a frontispiece engraved by Picart, 2 title finials engraved by Malder and Gilliam Van Der Gouwen after Bonaventure Van Overbeek, a header with the portrait of Louis XV engraved by Balthasar Bernaerts after Louis-Fabrice Du Bourg, and an unsigned lettering. In addition, there are 130 large and beautiful figures, most of them in the text, engraved by Martin Bouche, Bernaerts, Philipp Van Gunst, etc. after numerous artists such as Bernard Picart, Lebrun, Sébastien Leclerc, G. Maas and Jacob de Wit. Covers, part of the caissons and corners restored, title piece missing. Some foxing, soiling and spotting to the leaves. Restored tear with no missing parts to folio Bb1, with damage to the engraving, in the first volume, and to folio C2 in the second. Worm hole in the margin of the last leaves.
