SULLY (Maximilien de Bethune, duke of). Memoirs of Maximilien de Bethune, duke of Sully, principal minister of Henry the Great. London [Paris]: s.n., 1747. - 3 volumes in-4, porphyry calf, gilt fillet on the boards, ornate spine, yellow edges (period binding). New edition of the memoirs of the duke of Sully (1559-1641), minister of Henri IV, rewritten and published by the abbé Pierre-Mathurin de L'Écluse Des Loges (1713-1783). The text first appeared in this version in 1745.the illustration consists of a frontispiece engraved by Baudet after Licherie, a portrait of the duke of Sully engraved by Tardieu fils, three title vignettes engraved after Gravelot, a portrait of Henri IV engraved by Mathey, and three headpieces engraved by Fessard after Gravelot . Rubbing to the spines, missing headpieces, some spotting on the boards, corners dull. Some scattered foxing. Three leaves with handwritten notes have been glued to the endpapers in the first and last volumes. Provenance: heraldic bookplate in the first volume. - Joseph Evans, with bookplate.
