Michaud, 1814-1847 [vols. 11-80]; Paris: Au bureau de la biographie universelle, Beck, 1847 [vol. 81]. - 81 volumes in-8 (out of 85), red half calf, spine with false nerfs decorated, marbled edges, for volumes 1 to 69, and stapled under blue cover, not trimmed, for volumes 70 to 81. First edition of the famous biographical dictionary published by Louis-Gabriel Michaud (1773-1858) . Volumes 1 to 52 comprise the universal biography, from A to Z, volumes 53 to 55 contain the "Mythological Part", and volumes 56 to 81 constitute the supplements. The illustration includes several hundred line-engraved out-of-text portraits throughout the first 52 volumes . A splendid copy in very decorative period bindings. Only the first 69 volumes are bound, the others have been preserved in paperback, as issued. Spines faded. Upper corner of the first cover of volume 35 broken. Bends and a few tears to the covers of the bound volumes. Some foxing.
