GAUTIER DE SIBERT (Pierre-Edme). History of the royal, hospitaller-military orders of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem. In Paris, from the Royal Printing House. 1772. In-4, wide-margined copy (28,5 x 21,5 cm), (8 of which the first 2 are blank)-xvi-514-(2)- cvii-(1) pp. in garnet morocco, spine ribbed with partitions and fleurons, triple gilt fillet framing the covers with fleurons at the corners and spandrels, filleted edges, inner gilt border, edges gilt on red tint (contemporary binding). ORIGINAL EDITION, published at the expense of the Orders of Saint Lazarus and Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Founded in the twelfth century in the Holy Land, the Order of Saint Lazarus was dedicated to the care and defense of lepers. It was soon established in France, where it was entirely repatriated in the 13th century. In 1608, it was merged by Henry IV with the newly created Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which was dedicated to fighting against the Protestant heresy. In the eighteenth century, the grand masters were all princes of the blood. BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATION ENGRAVED ON COPPER, PRINCIPALLY AFTER DRAWINGS BY CHARLES EISEN, comprising: 6 plates out of the text, including an allegorical frontispiece and a portrait of the Count of Provence, grand master of these orders from 1772, and 10 bands or culs-de-lampe in the text, including a portrait of the Dauphin, the future Louis XVI, grand master until 1772 (Saffroy, t. I, n° 4491, which counts only 8 vignettes in the text). ONE OF THE LUXURY MAROQUIN BINDINGS DISTRIBUTED BY THE ORDER OF SAINT-LAZARE: its elegant binding is from the same workshop as the one with the arms of the marquis de Paulmy (chancellor of the Order of Saint Lazarus) covering the copy of this work now in the Bibliothèque nationale de France. THIS ONE OFFERED BY THE COUNT OF PROVENCE, FUTURE LOUIS XVIII, GRAND MASTER OF THESE ORDERS, dedicatee of the work (handwritten ex-dono). Provenance: library of the Marquis Paul-Eugène de Faudoas-Barbazan, brother of the Duchess of Rovigo (armorial bookplate). Spine a little faded, corners dulled.
