VERTOT (René Aubert de). History of the Knights Hospitallers of S. John of Jerusalem, called since the Knights of Rhodes, and today the Knights of Malta. In Paris, at Rollin, Quillau, Desaint, 1726. 4 volumes in-4, (12)-696 + (2 of which the second blank)-719-(1 blank) + (2)-552-(2 of which the second blank)-4 + (2 of which the second blank)-240-408-221-(1)-xx-2 pp. in brown granite calf, spine ribbed with partitions and fleurons, brown-beige title-pieces, ornamented spines, marbled edges (period binding). ORIGINAL EDITION of this oft-repeated classic (Saffroy, t. I, n° 5420, which does not mention the notice to the binder at the end of volume IV). IMPORTANT ILLUSTRATION ENGRAVED ON COPPER, mainly by Laurent Cars. It includes: 71 portraits (including those of the 66 grandmasters, that is, the unnumbered founder and the following ones numbered from 1 to 65), and 6 maps and plans (3 folding and 2 double-page, mounted on tabs). It also includes 4 historiated bands. Provenance: ex-libris vignette on the lower back cover of volume IV. - Library of the Marquis Paul-Eugène de Faudoas-Barbazan, brother of the Duchess of Rovigo (armorial bookplate). Bindings a little rubbed, a tear in a headband, heavy spotting on the boards, marginal wetness in volume II.
