Attributed to Gottfried KNELLER (1646-1723) Portrait of a gentleman with a cape Oil on oval canvas (lining) Small missing parts 84 x 65,5 cm Carved and gilded wood frame decorated with oak leaves, acorns and flowers from the Louis XIII period XIII Gottfried Kneller is known as a painter of portraits. Originally from Leiden where he was destined for a military career, the young man discovered a passion for painting which sent him to Amsterdam to train as a painter with Ferdinand Bol. After a fruitful trip to Italy and Germany, Kneller went to London where he rubbed shoulders with the most eminent portrait painters of his time, such as Sir Peter Lely, painter to Charles II. In England, the artist received a favorable reception from his peers and considerable success with his rich clientele, which allowed him to work for the nobility and even for the king, who, according to Walpole's writings, asked Lely and Kneller to portray him at the same time.
