Description

English school of the 18th century Portrait of George I (Osnabruck, 1660-1727), his son George II (Hannover, 1683-London, 1760), Prince of and his wife Caroline of Ansbach Princess of Wales (Ansbach, 1683-London, 1737), depicted in a palace Palace interior, probably Buckingham Palace Oil on canvas 26.8 x 36.5 cm Carved and gilded wood frame decorated with foliage and shells from the 18th century (restorations and small missing parts). Our painting was probably made after an engraving by Jean Simon (1675-1751) kept in the Royal Collection Trust in London (inv. RCIN 603773). The easily identifiable profiles of our figures can be compared with works held in public collections, including the portrait of George I wearing the State gown and Garter collar in the National Portrait Gallery by Godried Kneller (inv. NPG 544), and that of George II and Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach, who became queen, in the Royal Collection Trust (RCIN 603959). The opening of the window to a city view probably places the trio in Buckingham Palace, rather than Hampton Court, as most of the portraits there open onto a garden (RCIN 406182).
