Henri-Louis DE CHASTENAY (1772-1834). French school. The Marquis and the Marquise d'Herbouville, née Le Bascle d'Argenteuil, in their salon in the Place du Palais Bourbon. Ink and watercolor drawing signed and dated 1829 lower right. 22.5 x 30 cm. Framed under glass. B.E. Provenance: Sale Libert "SOUVENIRS DE MADAME LANVIN ET DE SA FILLE LA COMTESSE JEAN DE POLIGNAC", December 5, 2008, lot n°13. History: Charles Joseph Fortuné d'Herbouville (1756-1829) had married in 1798 Mademoiselle Marie Louis Le Bascle d'Argenteuil (1751-1829). The couple died within a few days of each other, the year of our watercolor. The author of the watercolor was related to the couple, his mother being a d'Herbouville and his grandmother a Le Bascle d'Argenteuil. Biography: Charles Joseph Fortuné d'HERBOUVILLE At the time of his marriage in Saint Sulpice de Paris, he was a marshal of camp, knight of the Military Order of Saint-Louis, and lived either in the castle of Saint-Jean de Cardonnay in the Pays de Caux, or in his hotel in Rouen, rue Sainte-Croix des Pelletiers. At the beginning of the Revolution, he was commander of the National Guards of Rouen in 1789, then became president of the department of Seine-Inférieure, and under the Empire, he was prefect of the Rhone and then lieutenant general in 1814 and hereditary Peer of France in 1817. He was also director general of the Post Office.
