1972 TRIUMPH STAG MARK 1 Number: LD116330 Low cost convertible V8 engine and Italian design Collector's French title Year 1964: Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti develops a grand touring convertible on the basis of a Triumph 2000 sedan. Harry Webster, chief engineer at Triumph, is seduced by his friend's model and decides to launch it in production. This was a good thing, because Triumph was increasingly interested in the American market. And a 4-seater convertible with a V8 engine would be perfectly suited. To meet American safety standards, Triumph fitted a roll bar to its convertible. Under the hood, the engineers decided to develop their own V8 engine. This engine, specific to this model, had alloy heads and an overhead camshaft per cylinder bank. With a displacement of 3 liters, fed by two Stromberg carburetors, it developed 147 horsepower and could be combined with either a 4-speed manual transmission (overdrive optional) or a 3-speed automatic transmission. Of fragile reputation, many engines were changed for V8 Rover, it is the case of our example. The chassis was perfectly modern for its time, with a self-supporting body and 4 independent wheels. It was not a small English roadster, but an attempt to enter the top range of Triumph, which was then very successful with its Spitfire, a range below. In 1970, when it was released, it was necessary to seduce a wealthy clientele. Less than 26,000 units were produced between November 1969 and June 1977. The selected vehicle has a beautiful green paint, enhanced by a double golden net on the belt. It is a beautiful, powerful, comfortable, spacious and silent tourer with a mechanic in good condition. Easily usable as a 2-seater thanks to its windscreen and its tonneau cover to cover the rear seat offering a significant additional luggage space. Moreover, this vehicle is equipped with its "Veronique" on the rear trunk for the transport of luggage. The dashboard is in original wood, enhanced by a beautiful wood and aluminum sport steering wheel (MOTO LITA accessory). The black imitation upholstery is in perfect condition. The car has its original aluminum rims and is equipped with a Blaupunkt car radio with stereo CD player, in perfect working order. Its technical control dated 15/06/21 shows some defects, which will have to be corrected (orientation of the lights, failure of a door lock, brake pedal travel...). So, we present a very flexible and pleasant car to use, which only asks to drive and swallow the Kms. A 4-seater convertible with an Italian design and a superb sounding V8, what more could you ask for? Power steering and electric windows? It is equipped with them!
