Important console table. In cherry wood. H. 72 cm - L. 250 cm - D. 80 cm. 1937. Condition : some stains and scratches on the top ; cracks on the legs and some chips. Provenance of lots 56,57 and 58 : Acquired by Professor Camille Soula directly from Mr. André Arbus for the furnishing of his house located at 17, rue Monplaisir, Toulouse, France. Then by descent. Reference: General Report of the 1937 World's Fair, The French Section, The Regional Participations, Volume 8, third paragraph, p.166. Yvonne Brunhammer, André Arbus architecte décorateur des années 40, Norma, Paris, 1996, p. 126. History: This console table was created by André Arbus for the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Modern Life in Paris in 1937, and more precisely for the furnishing of the relais le Cantegril, a restaurant in the Pyrenees-Languedoc pavilion. Note: "Native wood and straw were on the menu for the furnishings designed by Arbus for the Relais Cantegril, this restaurant in the Pyrenees-Languedoc pavilion, for which he made, we read in the report, the general study of the decoration and layout. He designed and built the tables, counters and chairs in cherry wood and straw. Knowing André Arbus and his taste for good food, one can imagine the pleasure he had in paying tribute to his native province.
