ANONIEM / ANONYME circa 1500

Pensive Christ. Mechelen. C. 1500. Oak. Original polychromy showing some wear due to age. Marked on the reverse with the city arms of Mechelen (three posts) and marked in front with polychromy mark of Mechelen 'M'. Fine detail of a toad near the skull of Adam at bottom. Top of head trimmed, left hand missing. Crown of thorns is missing. Right knee restored. Provenance Former collection W. Godenne, Brussels Christ is sitting on a low wall with on the other side on a grassy hill. On the ground, we find the skull of Adam with a toad besides it. The wall imitates rectangular stones, well traced and connected, the colour varying from off-white to gold with in the middle the polychromy mark of the city of Mechelen, an embossed letter 'M'. The figure of Christ holds his head slightly tilted, flanked by two strands of curly hair. The crown that used to encircle the head has disappeared. The slightly wavy locks reach the chest on both sides. The left hand is missing, while the wrists are firmly bound with a double knot. The bottom of the statue also contains traces of polychromy. This led Willy Godenne to hypothesize that the polychromist used the bottom as a palette. 38.5 x 15.5 x 12 cm Lit.: Exh. cat.
