Description

QUINTEN MASSYS (1465/66-1530)

(follower) Ecce Homo. Triptych. Panel. Latin text in Gothic handwriting on side panels. Underneath the frame, an apocryphal inscription '1472 Lucas Cranach de Oudere 1553'. The rendering of the figure of Christ, - his gaze looking downwards, the buckle-bound cloak around his neck and the bound hands - is inspired by Quinten Massijs' Ecce Homo (Venice, Palazzo Ducale, inv. Cl. I n. 0158, previously attributed to Albrecht Dürer). Therefore, this painting can be situated in the region of Antwerp most likely during the second half of the 16th century. However, several retouchings make the exact date of this painting rather difficult to determine. The side panels are slightly larger than the centre panel and executed in a slightly different style. They both bear a text in gilt Gothic letters on black background. 43.5 x 29.3 cm / 45.5 x 14.5 cm (x2)
