Description
Quatre plaques lobées d'un crucifix. Italie. Ca. 1400.
A set of four Italian nielloed silver plaques of quatrefoil shape. C. 1400. Depicting the Virgin Mary with Child and John, Mark and Luke the Evangelists. Niello on silver. Mounted on a cross-shaped wooden panel covered in light green velvet. First, the design is engraved using a 'ciapolla', a round-ended burin. Niello describes the technique of inlaying a combination of lead, sulphur, silver and copper into engraved metal (usually silver) for decorative effect. When filled with niello, this brings out the engraved lines of the design in black. Provenance: Private collection Rotterdam 6.2 x 6.2 cm (x4) (21.5 x 21 cm)
