ANONIEM / ANONYME 2/2 XIX Frankrijk / France

'Le marchand de dentelles'. "Le marchand de dentelle", Lyon, early 20th century. A rare advertising panel, one of which was presented at the 1914 Lyon International Urban Exhibition by the Lyonnais firm of Henri Chavent & fils, which produced tulles and mechanical lace. This panel was intended to demonstrate the company's ability to imitate the different types of handmade lace. It is based on a drawing by Louis Brouillard and depicts a scene in a lace merchant's shop in the early 18th century: the merchant presents lace to a lady and a gentleman, a small dog at their feet and very intrigued by the display. Ruffles of lace are suspended and placed on a counter in the background. Framing this central scene, rich ornaments with garlands and sprays of flowers with on either side a godronné vase loaded with flowers and a cartouche below marked "Le MARCHAND de DENTELLES". A similar example is housed at the Musée des Tissus in Lyon, SN 5963, and another in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, inv. 64.229.1 (Source: https://www.coutaubegarie.com/lot/92625/9422406?npp=20&offset=400&) 77 x 134 cm (87 x 143 cm)
