Description

*IMPORTANT RENAISSANCE CAMEE on multi-layered agate depicting the death of Cleopatra. The scene depicts the reclining queen holding the snake in her right hand, a soldier at her side and an equestrian figure in the background. This beautiful cameo is skillfully carved in low and high relief with Cleopatra's raised arm almost in the round. We can hypothesize, as indicated by Prof. Migliarini, that the city in the background is none other than Alexandria of Egypt, theater of the dramatic episode. The theme of moral implication, which had a great success in the production of Renaissance glyptics, is represented in other examples now preserved in the Museo degli Argente, Florence, Collection of the Gran Ducale. The cameo is engraved with deep lines almost in high relief with very delicate chromatic movements using the natural colored spots of the agate and thus approaching the Milanese production of the workshop Alessandro Masnago (Milan, 1560-1620). The figure of the reclining woman is totally inspired by the classical statue of Sleeping Ariadne in the Vatican Museums, which in the 16th century was considered a figure of Cleopatra.
