Battle scene, folio from a Shahnameh manuscript, Safavid Iran, late 16th century Manuscript folio on paper of twenty-one lines per page divided into four columns in Persian nasta'liq in black ink, a title indicated in a cartouche in red ink. On one side, an illustration in gold and polychrome depicting a rider lifting an enemy, one of whom is probably Esfandiyar mentioned in the title on the reverse. "09" inscribed in ink in the margin.
