Six-panel byôbu (room divider) screen with a Maruyama school painting of a rugged coastline. The scene is surrounded by gold leaf clouds. Signed lower left by the artist Maruyama Ôzui (1766-1829). Signed 'Made by Ôzui' . Sealed 'Ôzui' . He was the eldest son and student of Maruyama Ôkyo (1733-1795), founder of the main painting school in Kyoto - the Maruyama School. He adopted Ôshin, son of his brother Ôju as his son. In the 1790s, he was commissioned to paint some of the fusuma (sliding doors) for the restoration of the imperial palace in Kyoto. The panels are surrounded by two silk borders, one thin in brown brocade, and one wide in light brown and silver brocade. Protected by a black lacquered wood frame. Traces of age, wear and old restorations. Dimensions: Total width: 378 cm (2 x 64.4 cm, 4 x 62.3 cm); Height: 171.9 cm.
