Large six-panel byôbu (room divider) screen with a painting of five red-crowned cranes (tanchô'duru) surrounded by young pine trees. This painting is placed on a gold leaf background. Since ancient times, cranes in Japan were said to live a thousand years, serving as symbols of youth and long life in both literature and art. Pine trees are also synonymous with longevity. Signed and stamped twice at the lower right by the artist Ganryô (1798-1852), also known as Saeki Ganryô . The signature reads "Utanosuke Shiryô" , and the seals "Ganryô no in" and "Shiryô" . The panels are surrounded by two silk borders, one thin in white brocade and one wide in moss green brocade. The screen is protected by a black lacquered wooden frame. Small traces of age and wear.
