FLAUBERT (Gustave).

Samuel Bochart "Hierozoicon" - Saint Epiphanius "The Physiologist, or collection of the properties of animals, with mystical and moral reflections". Notes. Remarkable set of 6 pages recto-verso in-4, in sheets of handwritten notes taken by Gustave Flaubert during the preparation of La tentation de Saint Antoine. In a folder from the Flaubert sale of 1931. The first part (4 p.) is devoted to the work of Samuel Bochart Hierozoïcon, sive Bipertitum opus de animalibus Sacrae Scripturae. (Londini, T. Roycrofl, 1663). The second part (2 p.) is based on extracts from The Physiologist, or collection of the properties of animals, with mystical and moral reflections of Saint Epiphanius. The notes are from the former collection of Christian Fettweis acquired at the sale of the archives of Gustave Flaubert following the death of Caroline Flanklin Groult (niece of the writer) in Antibes, April 28, 1931 (lot 94 of the catalog).
