Henri MARTIN (1810-1886).
Republican and freethinker, he was editor-in-chief of Le Siècle. He was mayor of Paris's 16th arrondissement in 1870, then from 1880 to 1883. Elected to the Académie française to replace Adolphe Thiers.
- Set of documents concerning his teaching appointments, including a letter signed by Minister Hippolyte CARNOT appointing him to teach a course in modern history at the Faculté des lettres in Paris, in May 1848.
- L.a.s. "H. Martin" Paris January 19 (1882) 2 pp. in-12. Short letter addressed to Léon GAMBETTA: "... You alone can pull us out of this crisis out of all proportion to its causes and so dangerous ... Yours sincerely. H. Martin.
Adolphe CRÉMIEUX, Isaac Moïse dit (1796-1880). French lawyer and politician. In 1870, he passed the decree that bears his name, granting French nationality to the Jews of Algeria.
- L.a.s. "Ad. Crémieux" Bordeaux February 20, n.d., one page in-8, on Ministry of Justice letterhead. To pass on to Henri MARTIN, then people's representative, a letter he had just received from the lawyer and politician Emile Maugrer: "... he is a man of heart and merit, whom I like well. It seems to me, from what he writes to me, that you have esteem for him, which proves to me that I did well to give him mine".
- L.a.s. "Ad. Crémieux" October 24 n.d. half a page on an in-8 sheet, small tear in margin. He asks her: "... for November 13 two center seats at your delightful reception...".
Sadi CARNOT, Marie François (1837-1894). French statesman, son of Hippolyte Carnot and grandson of Lazare Carnot. Several times a minister, he became President of the Republic in 1887. He was assassinated by the anarchist Caserio at the 1894 Universal and Colonial Exhibition in Lyon.
- L.a.s. "Sadi Carnot" Paris December 12, 1882, 2 pages in-12, on the letterhead of the Chamber of Deputies. To inform the historian of the value of the Opera buildings: "... The land occupied by the Opera has been valued by the Domaine at 11 million. The building as it stands today, with its two unfinished side pavilions, cost 37 million...".
Attached, Cécile Sadi CARNOT (1841-1898), L.a.s. s.d, August 25, short letter in which she offers hospitality to Henri Martin, who was to come to Nolay for an inauguration.
Also enclosed Hyppolyte CARNOT (1801-1888). A lawyer, he became a radical deputy for Paris and Minister of Public Instruction in 1848. 7 L.a.s. of various dates and places, one to two pages in-8. Mainly devoted to political considerations.
Anatole de la FORGE (1820-1892). French journalist and politician. Republican. Wrote for Le Siècle. In 1870, he joined Gambetta in Tours. Replaced Henri Martin at the Ligue des Patriotes. Deputy for the Seine.
- L.a.s. "Anatole de la Forge" Paris April 15, 1862 one page in-8. To Henri Martin to inform him that he is going to Dordrecht to attend the inauguration of the monument to the painter Ary SCHEFFER.
- L.a.s. "Anatole de la Forge" Veules-en-Caux (Seine-Inf.) September 14, 1882, 2 pp. in-8 oblong. To Henri Martin, announcing that he has just obtained permission to adopt the daughter: "of a poor sailor who died suddenly two years ago..." whose literary works Victor Hugo, their beach neighbor, had just encouraged.
Auguste DIDE (1839-1918). French politician. Liberal, he went into exile in Switzerland during the Second Empire. After studying at the Protestant Faculty of Theology in Strasbourg, he became a pastor in the Gard region of France. He published La fin des religions, La légende chrétienne and Servet et Calvin. In 1885, he gave a premonitory speech on the separation of Church and State, ended his pastoral duties and joined the Droit Humain Masonic Lodge in Nice with his wife Noémie.
- L.a.s. "Auguste Dide, pasteur protestant" Paris January 9, 1976, 2 pp. in-8 on the letterhead of the Église Réformée de Paris. He asks the historian to intervene with the Minister of Fine Arts on behalf of an elderly painter and former outlaw.
Louis FAIDHERBE (1818-1889). French general and politician. He was colonial administrator of Senegal.
- L.a.s. "L. Faidherbe" Paris November 7, 1883, 2 pp. in-8 on the letterhead of the Cabinet du Grand Chancelier. To his dear ''Colleague'' Henri MARTIN, concerning the communication of certain documents concerning operations of the Armée du Nord, which would serve to illustrate his Histoire populaire.
Attached, Adolphe Le FLÖ (1804-1887). French general and politician, Minister of War during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. He distinguished himself during the capture of Constantine in Algeria in 1887.
- L.a.s. "Gén. Le Flô" Bordeaux February 25, 1871, 3 pp. in-8 on his ministry's letterhead. He thanks Henri MARTIN for writing to his wife in Paris, recommending that he encourage the integration of a former Lieutenant de vaisseau into the Garde Nationale.
Ernest de BUNSEN (Rome 1819 - London 1903) - Anglo-German writer specializing in the origins of religions.
- L.a.s. "E. de Bunsen" (London) Regent's Park May 14, 1864, 2 pp. in-8, on Abbey Lodge Hotel letterhead. In the first part of his letter, he asks the historian for information on what is known about the religion of the Serpent. His research into the primitive Brahman religion led him to discover that, for its followers, Adam was the first Aryan and the serpent of Eden in the Old Testament the first Semite: "Dear Mr. Martin, I have just made a rather remarkable discovery about the aborginal (sic) religion of the Serpent. Can you give me in a few lines the results of Baron Eckstein's and others' research on this point? Point of detail. Among which nations was the Serpent the symbol of good? Bunsen's theories were not without influence on Aryan racist mythology.
The second part of the letter deals with the worrying political situation in Europe: "... The war of nationalities will soon begin. No transaction is possible. If England takes the side of Russia and Austria, it will be very serious for her ... What blindness. Sweden should be everyone's friend against Russia ... and then Poland, Hungary and Italy will be free! All yours.
Pierre-Jean DAVID d'ANGERS (1788 - 1856). French sculptor and medallist. Grand prix de Rome, he created the pediment of the Pantheon in Paris.
- L.a.s. "David d'Angers" S.l.n.d. Friday, one page one-third in-12. Apologizing for his delay in replying to her, as he was unwell, and congratulating him on his articles on Reynouard.
Claude Anthime CORBON (1808-1891). French sculptor and politician. A Saint-Simonian, he was mayor of the 15th arrondissement during the 1870-71 war, and later a senator.
- L.a.s. " A. Corbon" Paris November 9, 1878, 3 PP. in-8 Long, beautiful letter about sculpture, but also considerations on atheism and religious convictions.
Camille FAMMARION (1842-1925). French astronomer, founded the Juvisy-sur-Orge observatory and the Société Astronomique de France. Author of La Pluralité des mondes habités (1862).
- L.a.s. "Flammarion" Paris December 23, 1879, one page in-8. Letter addressed to the historian: "Cher Immortel, J'ai remis hier au secrétariat de l'Institut trois exemplaires de L'Astronomie populaire", which he intends to submit to compete for various prizes.
- L.a.s. "Camille Flammarion" Paris January 19, 1881, one page in-8: "Dear illustrious historian, I have just learned of my nomination for the Légion d'honneur. My first concern is to express to you all my gratitude...".
- L.a.s. "Flammarion" Paris s.d. one page in-8: "Je reçois à l'instant, mon cher historien, votre grande et belle Histoire de France...".
Juliette ADAM (1836 - 1936). French writer, feminist and republican. She entertained the greatest names in literature and politics in her salon. She married Edmond Lambert, a lawyer and Republican deputy.
- L.a.s. "Juliette Ed. Adam" (Cannes) November 10, 1869, 3 pp. and a half, In-12. Expressing regret at not having been able to greet him and Madame Martin before his departure, hoping to see them again in Paris in the spring.
- L.a.s. "Juliette Adam" S.l. August 15, 1881, one page in-8. Seeking her support for his feminist movement.
Louise COLET, Louise Revoil, Mme (1810-1876). French woman of letters. A poetess, she composed collections of verse. A salon-goer, she frequented the most important literary figures of her time.

Ambroise THOMAS (1811-1896). French composer, renowned in the 19th century for his operas, including the famous Mignon.
