Cup for Frederik IV. King of Denmark and Norway Discolored, slightly streaky glass with cut and matt finish. Smooth plate base, faceted hollow baluster stem, conical dome. The crowned ligature monogram F4 on the front, engraved "VIVAT REX DANIAE" on the reverse, both motifs in a wreath of olive blossoms. Olive blossoms around a lens on each side. H 26 cm. Brandenburg and/or Lower Silesia (Schreiberhau/Szklarska Poreba), 1699 - 1730. Frederik IV. (1671 - 1730) was the eldest son of King Christian V of Denmark and his wife Charlotte Amalie of Hesse-Kassel. During his reign (from 1699), the Great Northern War took place, for which he allied himself with August II, King of Saxony and Poland, and Tsar Peter I. The war ended victoriously in 1720. It is possible that the cup was created for this occasion. In her essay, Susanne Netzer published a Brandenburg glass with the initials C5, for the father, King Christian V, from the Nationalmuseum Lyngby collection. On the basis of other goblets with cut and polished decorations illustrated in the catalog section, she also suspects a possible production in Bohemia. The cut of the goblet presented here can clearly be localized to Schreiberhau/Szklarska Poreba and may even be attributed to the hand of Hans Christoph Richter. Literature Cf. Keisch/Netzer, "Herrliche Künste und Manufacturen", Berlin 2001, fig. 9, p. 71 and nos. 131 ff. See also cat. No. 162. See also Zelasko, Baroque and Rococo in the Hirschberg Valley. Stein- und Glasschnitt 1650 - 1780, Passau 2014, no. 157, a goblet from the Passau Glass Museum, c. 1700, cut by Hans Christoph Richter.

H 13.5 cm. Schreiberhau (Szklarska Poreba), Preußler glassworks Weißbach, attributed to Samuel Schneider, 1760 - 70. Literature Cf. Zelasko, Baroque and Rococo in the Hirschberg Valley. Cup with the coat of arms of Imperial Count Friedrich Karl von Schönborn-Buchheim Discolored glass with cut and frosted edge. Plate base with a wreath of olive blisters on the underside, ribbon work on the top. Faceted solid shaft, faceted dome. H 17.6 cm. Schreiberhau (Szklarska Poręba), Preußler glassworks Weiberberg, attributed to around 1730. Friedrich Karl von Schönborn-Buchheim was born in Mainz in 1674, the son of a high-ranking civil servant, and embarked on a clerical career at an early age. He received his first benefice at Würzburg Cathedral in 1683. After studying at the universities in Würzburg and Mainz, he traveled to Italy. His uncle, Elector Lothar Franz von Schönborn, entrusted him with diplomatic duties. In 1700, he became provost of St. Alban's Cathedral in Mainz, followed by posts at Würzburg and Bamberg Cathedrals. One of Emperor Joseph I's first official acts was to appoint him Imperial Vice-Chancellor in 1705. In 1706, Frederick Charles had the Schönborn Palace in Vienna built by Lucas von Hildebrandt, who later also oversaw the extension of the Blue Court in Laxenburg. After the death of his uncle in 1729, he succeeded him as Prince-Bishop of Bamberg, shortly after which he received the second office in Würzburg. His reign is characterized by the construction or renovation of almost 100 church buildings and palaces, the most famous of which are the Würzburg Residence and Münsterschwarzach Abbey. He died in Würzburg in 1746. King Frederick II's sister, Margravine Wilhelmine of Brandenburg-Bayreuth, characterized him in her memoirs as follows: "The man we are talking about here was educated in Vienna. His great abilities helped him to the post of Imperial Chancellor, an office he held for a long time. When the bishoprics of Würzburg and Bamberg became vacant due to the death of their bishops, the court in Vienna used this opportunity to reward Schönborn for his services and was able to exert such an influence on the election that he was appointed administrator and bishop of these two bishoprics. He can rightly be considered a great genius and a great politician. His character also corresponds to this last quality; for he is false, treacherous and cunning; his nature is arrogant, his mind not attractive, because he is too pedantic; yet one gains sympathy with him on closer acquaintance, and especially if one seeks to learn from him. I was so happy to gain his favor. We often had conversations that went on for four or five hours. I was never bored; he introduced me to many things I knew nothing about. It was fair to say that he had a universal mind. There was nothing we didn't talk about together." (Source https://www.projekt-gutenberg.org/wvbayreu/memoiren/chap018.html) Literature Cf. cat. Meissen Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur - Round lidded tureen with fantasy birds under trellises Porcelain, colored overglaze decoration, gilding. Modeled after a Sèvres form. Decorated on two sides with domestic birds on terrain islands, framed by flower-covered trellises. The rims painted blue, as are the four rocaille feet, with a blue gold-contoured band around both branch handles. Struck base with faintly recognizable blue Swords mark. H 24, W 29 cm. Meissen, around 1760 - 63. It can be assumed that the tureen was made at the same time as the dinner service for the Prussian minister Wilhelm Finck von Finckenstein. However, the Dulong model, painted with domestic birds, was chosen for this service. Literature Cf. the tureen and platter from the Renate and Tono Dreßen Collection, illustrated in cat. Meissen Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur - Dinner plate from the "Japanese dinner service" for King Frederick II. Porcelain, colored overglaze decoration, gold rim. Model with curved fluted rim. Yellow mosaic edge, framed by fine purple rocailles. The riser shelf painted enamel blue. A landscape island with a turtle-like animal in the center. Blue Swords mark, impressed number 56. Restored rim chip between 4 and 5 o'clock, some glaze rubbing. D 24.4 cm. Meissen, 1762/63, the model by Johann Joachim Kaendler. During the Seven Years' War, the Prussian King Frederick II visited the Meissen modeller Johann Joachim Kaendler to personally inform him of his wishes for a service with his own drawings. In 1961, Otto Walcha published a memorandum by Kaendler dated November 11, 1762, which refers to the Japanese service. It shows that Frederick II gave Kaendler a French silver plate as a model, but also provided precise details of the decoration: "As far as the painting is concerned, this service should be painted yellow with mosaic on the rim and the inside edge should be somewhat glinde as usual with beautiful blue, so that the yellow is highlighted. For each bowl and plate, Your Royal Majesty has ordered that an Indian animal and bird be ground in beautiful proportions, such as camels, elephants, renoceros, panther-animals, baboons, monkeys, ostriches, casuaries, various pappagoyas and other Indian animals and birds (...)". This note was countersigned by Frederick II. The "most bizarre of all" service was intended for the Chinese House in Sanssouci Park, completed in 1764, and originally consisted of 96 plates and 72 dessert plates as well as four tureens and a dozen serving dishes. It is no longer possible to reconstruct how many of these were completed before the Peace of Hubertusburg. The plates and bowls are now scattered in numerous museums and collections, some of them only in fragments. Most of the pieces are in the possession of the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation. Meissen Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur - Round bowl from the Vestunen service for King Frederick II. Porcelain. French design model. Blue swords mark, turner number 36. Minimal chips to the stand ring, one to the rim. D 30 cm Meissen, 1763, the model by Johann Joachim Kaendler. After the peace treaty of Hubertusburg between the Prussian, Austrian and Saxon royal families in February 1763, the Seven Years' War was finally over and people looked forward to more peaceful times. On the occasion of the regained peace, Frederick II commissioned the Meissen manufactory in November of the same year to produce one of the most extensive and personal services with around 60 place settings and lavish figural table decorations. Kaendler's work report of November 11, 1763, published by Samuel Wittwer, states: "First of all, Your Royal Majesty requests a completely new table service with antique hanging vestments, which are attached to d'amour's heads and are raised flat, for which Your Royal Majesty has given a drawing in his own hand; [....The decoration is to consist of beautiful flowers, such as roses, poppies, carnations, hyacinths, poplars, tulipans, monstroses, in particular also with beautiful auriculas well arranged, whereby Your Royal Majesty has graciously ordered that never more than 2 flowers are to be painted on a plate or bowl, and that they are to be arranged proportionately and with consideration so that the colors do not clash. It has also been ordered that this service shall be called the Vestunen Servis." (op. cit., p. 68 f.) The name of the service has become history through this written source. The word vestunen = festoons refers to the flower garlands that decorate the vessels and plates, the shaping of which can be described as the most elaborate stage of production. Only very few pieces from the service are known. The Kaiser Wilhelm Museum in Krefeld owns a tureen and a roasting dish, while the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation Berlin-Brandenburg owns two warming bells and the centerpiece described in detail by Kaendler. The Berlin Museum of Decorative Arts has two of the dessert or fruit baskets from former Hohenzollern property as well as an unpainted flat plate. In the Dresden Porcelain Collection there is one of originally 240 flat dinner plates. The five-piece centerpiece of the figurative table decoration for the Vestunen service has been preserved in the Munich Residence Museum; the king wanted it undecorated. Before the Second World War, the Potsdam City Museum possessed one of the 20 warming bells; it is considered a war loss. We would like to thank Mr. Dag Nabrdalik for the text contribution. Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur Berlin KPM - Table mirror from a Frederician toilet service Porcelain, coloured overglaze decoration, predominantly in sea green and light purple, gilding, ebonized wood, mirror glass. Model 161, fired in several pieces, mounted on the wooden support with screws. Folding stand at the back. Smooth break in the left side strip, restorations to individual leaf edges, the tip of the rocaille grid at the top and the flowers in her hair. H 59.5, W 38.5 cm. Berlin, KPM, circa 1768. Three other versions of this rare table mirror are known to date: 1. the example published by Lenz in 1913, "gold, pink and green painted", formerly owned by Margarete Oppenheim (1857 - 1935). 2. the example published by Köllmann, then in the Karl-Heinz Wadsack collection, painted green, yellow and enamel blue. 3. the unstaffed example that appeared in the Orangerie auction in 2017. Lenz mentions several mirrors that were delivered to the king in the achivalic tables with the excerpts from Frederick II's treasury accounts. The first were delivered in 1767, proudly recorded with the comment "Two mirror frames, one 14 1/2 feet high, 3 feet wide, and the other 12 1/4 feet high, 3 feet wide, made and delivered to the king's utmost satisfaction to the new palace at Sans Souci." Under the date of delivery on 18.6. 1768 is the entry "2 compl. colorful gemd. Toilets with natural flowers and gold mosaic pp.". On December 21, 1768, the manufactory delivered "3 compl. toilets all white, each consisting of 2 candlesticks, 1 mirror, 1 large, 2 medium square toilet boxes, 2 poudre tins, 2 large, 2 medium, 2 small tins for pomade pp., 2 spirit bottles, 2 needle plates, 2 small, 2 large brushes, 1 washbasin together with 1 watering can and 1 soap ball tin". A few years later, with delivery on 25.7. 1774, there is also "1 complete toilet and mirror of 39 pieces with colorful natural flowers and gold edging". The popularity of these sets as prestigious gifts gives an idea of how important the daily ritual of body care and maquillage was at court. Wigs and powders created a uniform, well-groomed appearance that concealed revealing physical flaws and overly individual features. Every member of the royal court underwent this "grande toilette" procedure, which also included elaborate dressing. All of this took up a large part of the day. Lavishly forged silver toilet sets came into fashion in France under King Louis XIV. From the end of the 17th century, the Augsburg silversmiths produced large boxes with numerous pieces of furniture, which were distributed throughout Europe as orders or gifts. The first individual pieces made of porcelain or with porcelain handles were produced by the royal Meissen manufactory from the early 1730s. After the Seven Years' War and the takeover of the Berlin porcelain manufactory by Frederick II, toilet vessels and objects were also produced there to meet the needs of the court. Service by Dessin Englischglatt, painted with (...) colorful natural flowers and fruits (...), on the board a light blue vine tendril in ½ inch wide golden background (...)". This was an addition to an extensive dinner service that the French envoy had received from the Prussian king some time before. François Barthélemy played a decisive role in the negotiations between France and Prussia and in the conclusion of the Peace of Basel. Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur Berlin KPM - Cup with relief portrait of Princess Luise and saucer Porcelain, biscuit porcelain, lapis lazuli blue background with gold highlights, brown contour stripe, etched matt and shiny gilding, shiny gold background. Cylindrical model with claw feet. Blue sceptre mark, brown imperial eagle mark, brown I and black star (UT). Cup H 13.3, UT D 18.2 cm. Berlin, KPM, c. 1825, the model of the relief support after Leonhard Posch. The bisque relief depicts Princess Luise of Prussia (1808-1870), Princess of the Netherlands from 1825. Leonhard Posch made the bust portrait in profile to the left in 1825, the year and on the occasion of the marriage of the princess to Wilhelm Friedrich Karl, Prince of the Netherlands. The portrait is backed by a high oval medallion with a gold-etched vermicelli ground. The handle, the inside of the cup and the three claw feet are completely covered in bright gold. The magnificently designed cup indicates a royal order. It is possibly connected to the wedding service for 50 people, consisting of many 100 pieces, which the bride's father, King Frederick William III of Prussia, gave to his youngest daughter as a wedding present in 1825. In addition to the early painter's mark, the fact that Posch's design is dated 1825 also suggests that the cup was made at the same time as the dinner and dessert service. Königliche Porzellanmanufaktur Berlin KPM - Dinner plate from the dinner service for Friedrich Günther Prince of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt Porcelain and biscuit porcelain, overglaze decoration in black and purple, matt and shiny gilding. Model pearl plate no. 3, with turned edge in matt gilding. The double-headed eagle on the top of the rim. Dated 1835 in gold on the underside. Blue sceptre mark with KPM, red imperial orb mark, black H, impressed mark. D 25 cm. Berlin, KPM, 1835. Friedrich Günther von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt (1793 - 1867) was reigning prince from 1807 and married Auguste von Anhalt-Dessau (1793 - 1854) from 1816. The reason for ordering the dinner service is not known. However, in 1835, the principality joined the German Customs Union, which was dominated by Prussia. It is therefore quite possible that the prince ordered the service for this occasion.
