Gräflich Stolberg-Wernigerödische Factorei Ilsenburg - Rare reduction casting after the Parthenon frieze Cast iron with bronze patination. Model 794. Latin text on the left: "POMPA PANATHENAICA / POMPA CONTINVATA / HEROVM CONSESSVS POMPAE PARS ALTERA", on the right: "IN PARTHENONIS LATERE OCCIDENTALI / IN LATERE SEPTENTRIONALI SVPRA PARTHENONIS PORTAM ORIENTALEM IN LATERT MERIDION ALI". Cast multiple signature "HENNING" and numbering under the individual sections. H 44.5, W 140.5 cm. Count Stolberg-Wernigerödische Factorei Ilsenburg, second half of the 19th century, after the model by John Henning. The Scottish sculptor John Henning (1771 - 1851) met Lord Elgin in 1811 and suggested that he make miniaturized copies of the parts of the Parthenon frieze that were in his possession, based on his drawings. From 1820, he sold reliefs consisting of copies and additions of individual motifs that he had invented. In 1828, he produced an almost 16-meter-long "reproduction" made of Bath Stone, a type of limestone, for the London Athenaeum Club. The model for the reduction cast shown here was probably created after 1845, when Henning was producing prints. Literature Mentioned in the "Preis-Verzeichnis der Kunstguss-Waaren der Gräflich Stolberg-Wernigerödischen Factorei zu Ilsenburg am Harz" of 1889 under item 794: "Frieze of the Parthenon, modeled by Henning, 1.307 m long, 0.340 m wide [...] The same with wooden frame..." Ludwig Wilhelm Wichmann - Bust of the opera singer Henriette Sontag Bronze with fine green-gold patina. Engraved "W.Castner fec:" to the back of the shoulder. H 32 cm. With green serpentine base, total height 46 cm. Foundry Friedrich Wilhelm August Castner, the model by Ludwig Wilhelm Wichmann, 1827. Born in Koblenz, Henriette Sontag (1806 - 1854) was sent to the Prague Conservatory at the age of 16 to study singing, where Carl Maria von Weber discovered and supported her. After successes in Prague and Vienna, she received a call to Berlin, to the Königstädtisches Theater. She was appointed court and chamber singer. This was followed by performances on all the major European stages. Prince Hermann von Pückler (1785 - 1871) admired her and ordered a larger version of the cast from Wichmann, which is now displayed in the rose kiosk in Branitz Castle Park. The Potsdam-born sculptor Ludwig Wilhelm Wichmann (1788 - 1859) learned his art as a pupil of Johann Gottfried Schadow. He spent time in Paris from 1809 and worked under François Bosio and Jacques Louis David. Wichmann's plaster bust of the singer from 1827 is preserved in the collection of the Nationalgalerie Berlin (inv. no. G 34). The following year, Wichmann presented a marble version at the Berlin Academy Exhibition. This bronze bust of Henriette Sontag is evidence of Wichmann's collaboration with the Berlin sculptor and bronze caster Friedrich Wilhelm August Castner. Literature Cf. Friedrich Drake - Statuette of Alexander von Humboldt Cast zinc, gilded. Fully sculpted indoor monument on a square plinth with chamfered corners. Figure standing in a short stride, clad in a double-breasted frock coat and neck tie, looking into the distance over the open book held in both hands. Inscribed and signed "L. DRAKE 1857" on the plinth to the right. H 40.5 cm. Berlin, Ludwig Drake, 1857. Alexander von Humboldt (1769 - 1859) can certainly be described as the most famous German naturalist, geographer and explorer of the 19th century. He was involved in botany, zoology, mining and laid the foundations for modern meteorology. At the time this table statue was made, in 1857, he was already 78 years old. The Prussian parliament had just approved a law against slavery, a topical issue shortly before the American Civil War and one to which Humboldt was very committed. At the same time, he suffered a stroke and had to resign from his position as chamberlain to Friedrich Wilhelm IV. In 1857, Friedrich Drake (1805 - 1882) was a sculptor who was already known beyond the borders of Prussia, specializing in monuments and portraits. The sculpture collection of the National Gallery in Berlin contains a plaster model of his brother, Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767 - 1835), signed by Drake and dated 1834. The diplomat and scholar stands frontally in the same position and holds an unfolded sheet of paper in his hands. The proximity to the zinc cast is evident, especially as it is also a portrait of an old man, although the pose of the sitter and the physiognomic details largely deviate from the courtly idealism that was still binding during the reign of Frederick William III. It could well be that Alexander von Humboldt found this statuette of his brother exemplary and appropriate and asked Frederick Drake for a similar depiction. The finally completed model of the standing Alexander von Humboldt with the open book in his hands was so popular that it was also produced in other materials, e.g. in ceramic by the Ernst March pottery factory (Stadtmuseum Berlin, Inv. No. VI 23618). After Humboldt's death and on his 100th birthday, the German Society in Philadelphia USA commissioned Friedrich Drake to model and execute a monument to the polymath, who had visited the city in May 1804. The statue was erected in Fairmount Park and dedicated in 1869. Literature Cf. Maaz (ed.), Nationalgalerie Berlin. Inventory catalog of the sculptures. Das XIX. Jahrhundert, Berlin-Leipzig 2006, cat. No. 195.

Reinhold Begas - Reinhold Begas Kaiser Wilhelm I on horseback, led by the Allegory of Victory Bronze, finely chased, golden brown patina. Round foundry mark Gladenbeck. H 40, W approx. 22, D approx. 32 cm. Berlin, Gladenbeck foundry, around 1900. This is one of the rare reductions of the central equestrian motif from the Kaiser Wilhelm National Monument. The sculptor Reinhold Begas and the architect Gustav Halmhuber erected the 21-meter-high monument between 1895 and 1897 on Berlin's Schlossfreiheit. Reinhold Begas was born in Schöneberg on July 15, 1831. As the son of the German painter Carl Joseph Begas, he was the scion of a dynasty of artists spanning several generations and therefore came into contact with the fine arts at an early age. Unlike his famous father, however, Reinhold Begas was more enthusiastic about sculpture from the outset, so that he received his basic training not in his father's workshop, but with the sculptor Ludwig Wilhelm Wichmann in Berlin. In 1846, he began his studies under Christian Daniel Rauch at the Berlin Academy of Art, which at the time had Johann Gottfried Schadow, one of the greatest sculptors in German art history, as its director. Reinhold Begas himself achieved his first success with his plaster group Hagar and Ishmael and was able to visit Rome on a scholarship from 1856 to 1858. In the cosmopolitan city, rich in tradition and art, he made the acquaintance of artistic personalities such as Arnold Böcklin, Heinrich Dreber and Anselm Feuerbach and created his marble group Amor and Psyche in the style of the Swiss sculptor Ferdinand Schlöth. Under the influence of his experiences in Rome, not least through his study of the works of Gian Lorenzo Bernini and Michelangelo, Reinhold Begas leaned towards a baroque style that ran counter to the strict classicism that still prevailed. In 1861, he received a call from the still young Grand Ducal Saxon School of Art in Weimar, where he met his Rome acquaintance Böcklin again as a teacher and also got to know Franz von Lenbach. Reinhold Begas held his teaching post until 1863 and then returned to Berlin. Although there were repeated short stays in Rome and Paris, Prussian Berlin remained the home of the artist, who earned the goodwill of the Hohenzollerns with his undisguised pathos and received numerous prestigious commissions from Kaiser Wilhelm II. The Kaiser Wilhelm National Monument, unveiled in 1897, was designed by Reinhold Begas together with Gustav Halmhuber in the neo-baroque style; it survived two world wars but was destroyed in the GDR in 1950; only three figures were preserved.

LASZLO SZABO_x001D_ Debrecen/Ungarn 1917 - 1984 Ravanel/Oise - LASZLO SZABO_x001D_ Debrecen/Hungary 1917 - 1984 Ravanel/Oise Abstract composition. Bronze with golden brown patina with plinth and base. With the name and place inscription "Paris" in the plinth. Height: 119 cm; width: 21.5 cm; depth: 21.5 cm (all including plinth). With small scratch mark and rubbing to the edge of the plinth. After fleeing Hungary, Szabó studied at the art school in Geneva under M. Weber and H. Koenig. After receiving a scholarship, the artist lived in Paris from 1947, where his sculpturally designed studio, the so-called Académie du Feu, developed into a meeting place and workplace for up to 15 artists. From 1949, Szabó exhibited regularly at the Salon de la Jeune Sculpture, and from 1951 also at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles. Szabó had his first solo exhibition in 1953 at the Galerie Breteau, Paris. His work includes fertility idols, trees of life and anthropomorphic figures as well as birds and fish. Szabó saw sculpture as a premonition of a new kind of organic architecture. Sprawling natural forms and stylized elements based on mythological motifs combine to create a fantastic overall composition, the main characteristic of which is the round, gently flowing lines. Works in public spaces can be found in Munich in the Olympic Village, in Mannheim in front of the Kunsthalle as well as in Mainz and Wiesloch. [bg]

ANDREAS URTEIL_x001D_ Gakovo/Serbien 1933 - 1963 Wien - ANDREAS URTEIL_x001D_ Gakovo/Serbia 1933 - 1963 Vienna Figure, turned. Bronze, brown patina, 1961, Breicha 63 - Expl. "046"/1000. With the name in the plinth as well as the publisher's stamp of Edition Euro Art, Vienna and the foundry mark of Venturi Arte, Bologna. Height: 44 cm. Width: 13 cm. Depth: 13 cm. Urteil studied at the master school for sculpture under F. Wotruba in Vienna in 1953; his fellow students included J. Avramidis, A. Hrdlicka and R. Goeschl. After study trips, he moved into a shared studio with J. Ortner in 1956 and held a teaching position for stone sculpture at F. Wotruba's master school from 1961. "The artist is considered the main representative of informal sculpture in Europe. His materials are stone, wood, cement and cast bronze. Although he only had a few years at his disposal due to his early death from cancer, he was able to create an extremely intense, self-contained oeuvre in several successive phases. The starting point is the human form with its anatomical regularities... From 1955/56 onwards, he built up the figure as an additive, distinctly separate construction from individual parts of the body. He depicts the figurations as an exciting continuum of contradictory flowing movements in the transition from one action to the next with the stretching and bending of the limbs, expressing conflicting forces between compression and disintegration, pause and change, order and restlessness" (AOW/AKL; online).
